For NYC public high schools · Grades 9–12

Lola for NYC High School Mathematics (Grades 9–12), including AP Calculus AB

50 years of NYC math teaching, now in every student's pocket.

Lola is the friendly shih tzu math tutor at the heart of Lola Math, an edtech product of firstprep. She coaches students through Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus AB with hints, not answers, and gives teachers a live picture of their class by NYS Next Generation standard and AP unit. Lola also supports community college students in developmental and corequisite math.

Lola, a smiling shih tzu mascot, waving

New York made. New York proud.

Our founder

Lola was designed by Dr. Matthew Rudy Meangru, founder of Lola Math and a native New Yorker from Sunnyside, Queens, whose family has taught mathematics in NYC classrooms for over 50 years. From Algebra I to AP Calculus, every lesson, hint and practice exam is shaped by decades of knowing exactly what NYC students need to succeed in mathematics, on their exams and beyond.

The real Lola

Meet the real Lola.

Lola is the Meangru family's Shih Tzu. Her bows, her big brown eyes and her happy face inspired the Lola who now cheers on NYC students through every problem.

Lola, the cartoon tutor, is based on a real-life Shih Tzu: Dr. Matthew Rudy Meangru's family dog.

A worldwide lens on education.

Lola's founder was educated at NYU, Columbia University and the University of East Anglia, bringing research from New York and the UK into every lesson, each one mapped to the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards (and the College Board framework for AP Calculus AB), so students, teachers and parents can see exactly which standard every problem builds.

See how Lola tutors

A real Geometry session with a demo student (about 2½ minutes, with Lola reading her replies aloud): Lola gives hints, not answers, reads a sketch and a photo of handwritten work, and spots the first slip. Then, on a practice question, the student sketches the answer on the drawing pad instead of typing it, and Lola reads it and checks it.

Lola's replies, and her reading of the sketched answer, are the real ones from that session, replayed at reading speed; her voice is AI-generated (the same voice students hear in the app). Demo student; no real student data.

One tutor for the whole NYC math pathway

Each class is set to a course by its teacher, so students always practise the right content. Every question is tagged with its NYS standard code (or AP CED topic).

Grade 9 · Regents

Algebra I

7 units, from linear equations to quadratics, exponential models and statistics. Regents-style practice exams in the Next Generation format.

Grades 9–10 · Regents

Geometry

Transformations, congruence and proof, similarity, right-triangle trig, coordinate geometry, circles and modeling.

Grades 10–11 · Regents

Algebra II

Complex numbers, polynomials, equations and systems, functions, exponential and log models, trig functions, statistics and probability.

Grades 11–12

Pre-Calculus

Functions and symmetry, rational functions, exponential and log functions and trigonometry, built on NYSED's Plus (+) standards pathway.

Grades 11–12 · AP

AP Calculus AB

All 8 CED units, AP-style practice exams in the May 2027 format (42 MCQ + 6 FRQ) with FRQ rubrics and a clearly labelled score estimate.

Community College Developmental Math

Corequisite support for community college students: 11 units from fractions and signed numbers to factoring, radicals, functions and statistics. More below.

Also for community college students

Lola also supports community college students in developmental (remedial) and corequisite math: the support section that many community colleges now pair with a credit-bearing math course in the same semester. A professor creates a class for the track, shares a join code, and students practise the algebra their credit course depends on, with the same hints-not-answers tutor.

11 units

Fractions, percents and signed numbers; linear equations, inequalities and word problems; graphing lines and systems; exponents, polynomials and factoring; quadratic equations, rational expressions and radicals; functions; quantitative reasoning and statistics.

Elementary algebra practice tests

25 multiple-choice questions, 100 minutes, no calculator. Practice aligned with community college developmental/corequisite math, with original questions; it is not an official exam and no placement or pass mark is claimed.

Written for adult learners

Lola talks to college students as adults: respectful and confidence-building, with hints instead of answers, every answer checked by a math engine (SymPy), and all math in proper notation. Professors get the same heatmap, Activity and CSV export as teachers.

📷 Photo

Snap it

Take a photo of a problem or your written work, straight from your phone camera. Lola finds the first slip and gives a hint, not the answer.

✏️ Drawing pad

Sketch it

Draw an equation, a graph or a diagram with your finger or a stylus, add a note if you like, and send it to Lola.

🎤 Voice

Say it

Hold the mic and ask out loud. Lola answers in a soft, friendly voice, and you can mute her any time.

Everything else

💬

Chat with hints, not answers

Lola asks guiding questions and checks every answer with a math engine (SymPy), not a guess. Full solutions unlock only after a real attempt and two hints.

🛡️

Teacher-controlled tools

Photo, drawing and voice follow the same hint-first rules as typed chat, and teachers can switch photo or voice off for any class.

🎯

Practice by unit

Original, auto-checked questions generated fresh each time (132 question types across six courses), with worked solutions and short verified videos.

📝

Regents-style and AP-style exams

Timed practice exams with a score report by part, unit and standard. Written work is reviewed point by point.

🗓️

A study plan to exam day

Weeks to the Regents or AP exam, weighted by the exam blueprint and by each student's own results.

💛

Confidence check-ins

Short mathematical-resilience check-ins, so teachers can see confidence and persistence grow, not just scores.

What teachers get

  • Classes and join codes: create a class for any course, share a code, or add students yourself and reset passwords.
  • Heatmap by unit and standard: every student × every unit, plus accuracy per NYS standard code or AP topic.
  • Per-student detail: time on task, hints, exam history with estimates, study plan and check-ins.
  • Assign work: unit practice, quizzes, Regents-style or AP-style exams, strategy lessons, with due dates.
  • CSV export of students, standards and exams for your gradebook or data meetings.
  • Feature toggles per class: chat, voice and photo upload.

Exam practice that matches the real format

Regents-style (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II)

Follows the Next Generation Regents format in NYSED's Educator Guides: Part I 24 multiple-choice questions, Parts II–IV constructed response worth 2, 4 and 6 credits, 3 hours, graphing calculator. All questions are original, not NYSED items. Results show an estimated performance level (placeholder bands; NYSED publishes the official conversion chart for each exam).

AP-style (AP Calculus AB)

Follows the format that starts in May 2027: Section I 42 multiple-choice (29 without calculator, 13 with), Section II 6 free-response (2 with calculator, 4 without). FRQs are scored point by point against a rubric; the AP score shown is an estimate, not a prediction. The 2027 exam is scheduled for Mon 10 May 2027.

Privacy by design

Minimal data

First name and last initial only. No email, birth date, address or student ID numbers. No ads, no selling data.

Pseudonymous AI

The AI never sees a student's name: each student is a random ID, and names typed into chat are replaced before anything is sent.

Teacher controls

Chat retention set per class (transcripts are deleted after it), feature toggles, and one-click removal of a student's data.

A real NYC DOE deployment would need a signed data privacy agreement under New York Education Law §2-d and DOE vendor approval. Read the privacy page.
